World’s most expensive planes

The Wright brothers changed the world when they were able to fly and control a powered aircraft back in 1903.Although they were in the air for a very short duration, their work pioneered today’s aircraft industry and led to a radical transformation in the way man could travel. Today we have planes that can travel at three times the speed of sound and even carry tonnes of cargo around the globe. These engineering marvels are some of the most complex machines today and they cost quite a bagful of cash. Below are the top five world’s most expensive planes:

B-2 spirit jet. Northrop Grumman made the planes for the US military who are well known for spending when it comes to military hardware. The B-2 Spirit is at definitely at the top of any list that has to do with the world’s most expensive planes. Although it can only accommodate two passengers, the plane does have some of the most advanced stealth technology and electronics ever created and can be used to deliver nuclear payloads. However all this came at a steep price even for the deep pocket military, with a single B-2 spirit jet costing over 700 million dollars per unit, forcing congress to reduce the initial order from 132 to 21.

A billionaire who has chosen to remain anonymous spent close to 600 million dollars to buy and customize the interior of a Boeing 747 landing him the number two spot in the list of the world’s most expensive planes. The plane has bedrooms, boardrooms, lounges a fancy restaurant among other amenities all of which feature elegant furnishing and finishes that money can buy. A Saudi prince did place an order for an Airbus A380 that would have cost close to 500 million dollars after being retrofitted but the order was cancelled in early 2015.

3) Cathay.pacific.a340-600.b-hqb.arpBourkhan is the name of a custom fitted Airbus A340 owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov said to have cost him up to 450 million dollars for the plane and custom interior fitting work. The plane named after the billionaires father can fly for 9000 miles nonstop. Details on the interior are quite hard to come by but there are indications that it is nothing short of luxurious.

P-8A-Poseidon1Boeing P-8 Poseidon. Costing a little over 250 million dollars, the Poseidon is a US navy aircraft useful for
maritime operations and combat. The plane is a modified version of a Boeing 737 that can be used for electronics signal intelligence. It also has a variety of weapons such as torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and depth charges.

E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is a surveillance plane and airborne early warning command plane that costs slightly above 175 million dollars per plane earning it the last spot on our list of the five most expensive planes in the world.The plane which operates with a crew of five, can carry out radar surveillance, provide air traffic control and even assist in search and rescue operations.
