As we go about traveling or exploring new locations, we often find ourselves stumbling upon some of the new city names that we come in contact with. 1. Krung-thep-maha-nakorn-boworn-ratana-kosin-mahintar-ayudhya-amaha-dilok-pop-nopa-ratana-rajthani-burir Thailand.
Now, this city is most commonly simple called “Bangkok” for most international affairs but the real name for it is much, much, longer than that. The name is so long, in fact, that many people who currently live there can never remember how to say it. Most commonly the people who live there and in surrounding areas like to call the city “Krungthrep” for short. In English, the words translate as calling the place a city of angels, and celebrating Thai culture and the city itself, filled with grand royal places and paradises.If a person wants to be able to travel to the world’s longest city name, they should start with Krungthrep.
2. Тetaumatawhakatangihangakoauaotamateaurehaeaturipukapihimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuaakitanarah, New Zealand.
This city essentially consists of one famous giant hill, where it is said “the man with giant knees who climbed and swallowed the mountain plays a flute just for his loved one,” which is one the name above translates to. It is a wild tourist attraction near Porangahau, and was recently added to the famous Guinness Book, which contains all the World Records for having one of the longest place names in the whole world!
3. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwymdrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Whales.
58 letters long and translated into describing the location of two very famous churches there which are St. Mary’s Church as well as the Church of Saint Tysilio. Many people come from all around to see those churches. The people of this village advertise their long name by posting a very long sign outside the village
that is a very famous spot that tourists like to photograph.
4. El pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles (sobre el Rio de la Porciuncula), California
Who would have thought that a city in America would be considered on of the longest titled names. The Reason for this is because today we call it “Los Angeles” or “City of the Angles” originally the governor there gave it the name above because she wanted it to be called “Town of the Queen of the Angels (over the river Poriuncula)” It’s funny that what was once one of the longest city names, today is is very often just referred to as “L.A”
5. Freixo de Espada a Clinta, Portugal
This city was founded in the 14th century, and was named after the King who founded it, who supposedly tied his sword to an ash tree before leaning on it. (the city translates to “Ash-tree girded with sword.” This city is famous for it’s beautiful trees and plants, and a scenery that will take your breath away.
So before planning your next honeymoon or family vacation, consider visiting one of these cities famous for their long names and beautifully worded history told within their names. Many of them are famous locations and would be worth the visit even if they didn’t have long names. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to visit a city with the name
